Virginia Maksymowicz: Structural Transparencies

March 20, 2018 - April 26, 2018

Free

The Phillips Museum of Art is pleased to present an exhibition by Virginia Maksymowicz, Franklin & Marshall College Professor of Sculpture.  Through a variety of two- and three-dimensional media, the artist follows a complex visual trail of architectural and figurative elements: caryatids, columns, canephorae, baskets of produce, Corinthian capitals, acanthus, as well as bodies, bones, bread and water.  Maksymowicz does not aim to “prove” the connections she makes among them through historical methodology.  Instead, by giving them tangible form, she permits structure and metaphor to become transparent.
