Sunday November 27th from 2-3:30pm: Wind Power
 
Participants will initially learn the basic principles of wind turbines. Participants will have the opportunity to analyze and understand how a blade’s number, length, shape and pitch angle will affect the power output. Then they will be challenged to build their own wind turbine in order to produce maximum power output.
Led by: Dr. Memhet Goksu, Millersville University

Gifts help us to offer free admission to all 6th grade classes and youth-serving non-profits in Lancaster County, free Pre-K programs, free First Fridays, free weekend Make It Yourself Workshops, free Scout programs, and scholarships to Summer Science Camp and Girls Code Club. The Science of Star Wars Returns!

The Lancaster Science Factory will be participating in the Extraordinary Give with two events that are out of this world! Events will feature kid-friendly Star Wars science activities and plenty of costumed characters.

Saturday, November 12th, 1 – 4 pm:
• See the Capital City Jedi Knights and Ghost Base perform a lightsaber battle.

Sunday, November 13th, 12 – 2 pm:
• Mingle with Darth Vader and dozens of Star Wars characters from Garrison Carida, local unit of the 501st Legion.

Friday, November 18th , 3 – 6 PM
The Lancaster Science Factory will be offering FREE ADMISSION from 3 – 6 pm for the Extraordinary Give. Join us in the Science Cafe for some hands-on activities related to the movies.

Join Fox Meteorologist Drew Anderson to uncover the how’s and why’s of weather. Experience weather first hand while doing hands on experiments that will give you a deeper understanding of the weather you see around us every day.

Take learning to the next level with the new ‘Interactive Science Discovery’ series at The Lancaster Science Factory! This FREE family-friendly event will feature our partners from Franklin & Marshall College.

Since this event falls on HALLOWEEN, costumes are encouraged!

Join F&M professors and students to explore spooky magic tricks! You will learn some tricks and take home the materials you will need to perform them, and discover the psychology, math and physics behind these tricks.

Plus, see some amazing tricks by an F&M Student and Magician. He will not reveal his secrets, but you can watch, and then try to figure out how the heck did he do that?!?

The regular LSF exhibits will all be open for science play, and don’t worry, there will be treats with the tricks! All guests in attendance will enjoy FREE pizza generously provided from Pats Pizzeria!

Acids and Bases: The Candy Science of Sour

Students will have the opportunity to work with Acids and Bases but from the prospective of candy and foods. Students will learn how to determine an acid from a base using pH paper and acid/base tests. They will learn how to read the color scale associated with an acid or a base and be able to determine which items are strong acids/bases and those that are weak acids/bases. Students will also be able to tell if a food is an acid or base from their own facial expressions as they take that first taste.

Cost is $15 per child, per session

The REAL World of Welding

Let High Steel and Lincoln Electric bring you up close and personal to the REAL World of Welding. Try your hand at virtual welding and see if you’ve got the steady welder’s hand. Then dress the part of the arc welder with welding helmet and shirt and actually join two plates by ARC welding. You never know what is to come next as you become a WELDER for a day.
