Chemical and Physical Change: Ice Cream to Elephant Tooth Paste
Students will be exploring the changing world around use. Students will be introduced to physical changes and matter as well as provided some visual everyday examples. Students will then be introduced to chemical changes and its difference to a physical change. They will also have the opportunity to participate in a few examples of a chemical change. Then the students will be asked to identify the change in some experiments before their very eyes; whether it is the explosion of popcorn, the creation of ice cream or making of elephant tooth paste. Students will then be able to determine the importance of these changes to our everyday lives.
Standards aligned: 3.4.7A, 3.5.7D, 3.1.7C, 3.1.7E, 3.2.7B

Food for Measurement: It’s only a Fraction
Students will have the opportunity to put fractions to use in everyday life. Students will first be introduced to the basic fractions. Students will learn the connection between the numerator and the denominator by using measuring cups. They will be able to place fractions in increasing and decreasing orders. Student will then use their new found knowledge and make a measurement surprise.

Solid, Liquid or Gas: It’s a State of Matter
Students will be engaged into a state changed debate. Students will be taught the three main states of matter. They will then look closely at how changes in matter from state to state can occur. Students will then be given an number of experiments requiring them to determine the state of matter. Students will then be asked to infer real world applications for why state changes are important to know and recognize.

Metals/Nonmetals/
Students will be introduced to the concept of magnetism and basic terminology. Students will have the opportunity to explore the polarity of magnets and understand attraction and repulsion forces. Students will be introduced to metals, nonmetals and metalloids. Students will be provided with a number of materials to classify into each of the newly introduced categories. Students will get a first hand opportunity to see how metals may interact with their everyday life…. And their breakfast.

Potato Power: Electric Circuits at their Best
Students will have the opportunity to learn the basic terminology of a circuit and the purpose of the electron. Students will learn the difference between AC and DC power. They will learn how to use a voltmeter. Students will construct a basic circuit. Students will then expand their basic circuit to a series circuit and parallel circuit. Student will be able to compare and contrast the two expanded circuits. Student will also be able to infer real world applications for all three circuit types. Students will then apply their knowledge and work with an alternative energy sources (Lemon or Potato) to create a battery and a functional basic circuit on their own.

Don’t spend Presidents’ Day laying around the house, come to The Lancaster Science Factory for some hands on science fun. Special cafe demonstrations are scheduled to run 10am-12pm and 1-3pm and will be lead by our special guest volunteer, Chuck Williams! Experience ‘Newton’s Nightmare’, learn about the world’s smallest electric motor and see the SCIENCE IS FUN drone in action.
20 minute sessions will run in the Cafe from 10am-12pm and 1-3pm. Seating is first come, first served.
Activities are geared towards children ages 8 and up, but younger children are welcome to participate with adult assistance.
All activities are FREE with your paid admission (8.50 per person) or Lancaster Science Factory membership.
